April 22nd Iris Jehle This is Andrew Griffin of Mariquita Farm with Life on the Farm. We are picking strawberries now. The orchard next door already has little cherries starting to swell and dangle from the twigs. Seasonal farmers markets will be springing up in communities along the central coast for local growers to sell their harvests. Farmers markets that stay open all year will see a surge of shoppers hungry for ripe fruit. But not every town has a farmers market. I asked Iris Jehle-Peppard what it takes to start a farmers market. Iris started Marina's farmers market last year for her senior project in community organizing at CSUMB. Community support is key she explained; support from local authorities who grant use permits and support from shoppers whose repeat business keeps growers coming back each week. Marina city councilman Bruce Delgado helped Iris get a hearing before Marina's city council and he helped her secure a market site at the Monterey Salinas Transit spot across from the post office. Luis Sierra, of CSUMB's Service Learning Institute, helped Iris locate growers to fill the stalls and volunteers to staff the market. Now the Marina farmers market is in its second season and shoppers are showing up every Sunday from 10 to 3 and giving their support. To see the fruits of a degree in community organizing, stop by the market in Marina on Sundays and visit Iris at Everyone's Harvest. For KUSP this is Andrew Griffin.
